Специалисты из Национального управления океанических и атмосферных исследований (NOAA) провели месяц в наименее изученных водах Северной Атлантики — в акватории Новой Англии.
На 20-ый день экспедиции, которая длилась с 30 июня по 29 июля, дистанционно управляемый аппарат Deep Discoverer увидел медузу, видовая принадлежность которой остается для морских биологов загадкой.
Встреченный морской обитатель — ярко-красный. Медуза попала в объектив на глубине 700 метров.
Возможно, живая находка относится к роду Poralia. Сегодня биологии известен один его представитель — Poralia rufescens. Ответ на этот вопрос ученые надеются получить после лабораторных исследований — оснащенный специальным оборудованием, аппарат доставил алую находку на борт исследовательского судна.
