Десятки дельфинов выбросились на берег в Новой Зеландии. Как объяснили ученые?
Десятки гринд (черных дельфинов) 17 марта выбросились на берег и погибли в Новой Зеландии. Департамент охраны природы сообщил, что млекопитающие погибли на отдаленном пляже под названием Прощальная коса на Южном острове.
На берегу нашли 34 гринды. Пять удалось снять с мелководья и спасти. Одного из выживших дельфинов пришлось подвергнуть эвтаназии, он был в очень плохом состоянии и не смог бы выжить.
Причина, по которой, гринды выбрасываются на берег, неизвестна науке до сих пор. За последние 15 лет на пляж Прощальная коса выбросилось всего 10 гринд. Зато в других местах дельфины выбрасываются массово. В 2020 году 470 гринд погибли у берегов Тасмании, в Шри-Ланке на берег выбросилась стая из 120 дельфинов.
Теперь ученые говорят, что причина в эхолокации китов и дельфинов. Она плохо работает на мелководье у берега, и это приводит к дезориентации животных. А, когда один член стаи выбрасывается на берег, остальные часто следуют за ним.
