Палеонтологи из Института палеонтологии позвоночных и палеоантропологии Китайской академии наук обнаружили останки гигантского млекопитающего.
Это самое крупное из всех обнаруженных когда-либо сухопутных. Существо, жившее 26 миллионов лет назад, весило 24 тонны.
Ученые назвали его Paraceratherium linxiaense. Носорог – так охарактеризовали бы его сегодня — жил на северо-западе Китая в провинции Ганьсу, между Тибетским нагорьем и Внутренней Монголией.
Рост млекопитающего в холке составлял 5 метров, голова возвышалась на 7 метров, длина тела — более 8 метров, вес — 26 тонн. Это равноценно четырем современным африканским слонам.
Китайские ученые подчеркивают, что огромные доисторические млекопитающие не походили на современных носорогов. Более они напоминали поросших шерстью тапиров. С носа у Paraceratherium linxiaense свисал небольшой хобот, с помощью которого он обрывал листья деревьев.
