Французские исследователи-подводники почти случайно нашли новый кратер, которого прежде не существовало.
Вулкан возвышается над морским дном у побережья острова Майотта в архипелаге Коморские острова в Индийском океане у северного входа в Мозамбикский пролив, между Мадагаскаром и побережьем Мозамбика. Высота кратера составляет 820 метров.
Анализируя возможные причины его происхождения, ученые сошлись на единственной. Кратер породило крупнейшее из когда-либо задокументированных подводных извержений — извержение 10 мая 2018 года. Спустя 5 дней после его начала на близлежащем острове произошло землетрясение магнитудой 5,8.
Речь шла о вулканической активности примерно в 50 км от восточного побережья Майотты, французской территории Коморских островов.
