Ученые из Бристольского университета решили восполнить пробел в понимании причин социального поведения жирафов, но неожиданно наткнулись на физиологический казус. Им удалось узнать, почему жирафы-самки раньше всех в животном мире вступают в фазу менопаузы.
Ведущий автор исследования Зои Мюллер взяла за основу среднюю продолжительность жизни жирафов-самок в дикой природе — 28 лет. При этом половой зрелости животные достигают в 4 года, но после 20 лет уже не репродуктивны.
Получается, в детородной возрастной группе они находятся всего 8 лет, и это 35% процентов продолжительности их жизни.
Изучая поведение групп жирафов старше 20 лет, Мюллер обнаружила, что ранняя менопауза превращает самок в бабушек. Достигнув пострепродуктивного возраста, они занимаются воспитанием потомства, позволяя молодым самкам заботиться о поисках мест для питания.
Эта модель работы организма и социального поведения называется «гипотеза бабушки». В случае женщины эволюция распорядилась ее телом так, чтобы направить энергию на заботу о следующих поколениях.
Жирафы — не единственные « бабушки» в животном мире. Соответствие «гипотезе бабушки» есть у слонов и косаток.
Обнаружила Мюллер и то, что в стадах, где много «бабушек», смертность юных особей снижается.
