В начале 20-х годов XX века на бывшем острове-городе Мотия на западе итальянской Сицилии исследователи обнаружили бассейн Котхон. Это искусственное сооружение возрастом 2,5 тысячи лет.
Было решено, что это военная гавань древних финикийцев, датированная периодом между 550 и 397 годами до нашей эры.
Раскопки в этом месте возобновились в 2002-2010 годах по той причине, что у края Котхана археологи обнаружено большое здание, которое оказалось храмом в честь финикийского божества Баала. Находка изменила взгляд на назначение бассейна. В итоге ученые пришли к пониманию — это священный бассейн древних финикийцев, который служил им для отслеживания движения звезд.
В последующие 10 лет ученые, анализируя данные, пришли к выводу, что что Котхон не был связан с морем и наполнялся из природных источников, поэтому «не мог служить входом в гипотетический судоходный бассейн.
Исследуя погребальные камни, алтари и постамент в центре бассейна, в котором сохранились ступни высокой статуи, ученые догадались, что местоположение бассейна было ориентировано по звездам. Древние астрономы использовали его как зеркало — для отслеживания движения небесных светил.
