Ученые нашли на Марсе гигантский ударный кратер. Специалисты совместной миссии Европейского космического агентства (ЕSА) и российского космического агентства «Роскосмос» показали изображение, сделанное орбитальным аппаратом 13 июня 2021 года на северных равнинах Ацидалийской равнины.
На фото поверхности Красной планеты исследователи обнаружили образование, напоминающее пень от дерева с концентрическими кольцами. Выяснилось, что это углубление, представляющее собой ледяной ударный кратер.
Кольца кратера не показывают его возраст, но могут помочь исследователям лучше понять, из чего состоит структура кратера и что происходило на Марсе на протяжении всей его истории.
Ученые говорят, что кратер заполнен отложениями, богатыми водяным льдом. По их мнению, отложения осели в ударном кратере из-за того, что со временем изменился наклон или ось вращения планеты. Наклон планеты всегда вызывает сезонные изменения, а у Марса он с течением времени сильно изменился по сравнению с наклоном Земли.
Астрономы считают, что кольца и трещины кратера являются результатом смены времен года и температуры: материал в кратере расширяется и сжимается в зависимости от жары и холода.
