Ученые задумались — как скоро Земля потеряет свое магнитное поле
Международная группа ученых смогла измерить значения магнитного момента Земли в неолит, — иначе говоря, воссоздать древнее магнитное поле Земли.
Проанализировав имеющиеся археологические находки, исследователи из Израиля, Италии и США опубликовали отчет о замерах в журнале Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Материалом для исследований стали 129 орудий из кремня и осколков керамики, возраст которых варьируется от 8 до 10 тысяч лет. Все эти предметы были найдены на территории археологического памятника Вади-Файнан в Иордании.
Полезная информация сохранилась в крошечных кристаллах этих предметов — ферромагнитных минералах, «считывать» которые сегодня возможно в лабораторных условиях.
Что же узнали исследователи? В неолите магнитный момент Земли (это основная физическая величина, показывающая способность создавать и воспринимать магнитное поле) был небольшим, но потом резко увеличился. Если в 7600 году до нашей эры он составлял лишь две трети современного показателя, к 7000 году до нашей эры его сила возросла. А вот после 5200 года до нашей эры магнитный момент начал постепенно ослабевать.
Самое важное и неутешительное для ученых — констатация последовательного снижения магнитного момента Земли. Это означает, что в определенный момент планета может полностью потерять свое магнитное поле.
