Ученые из немецкого университета Тюбингена и испанского Сарагосы обнаружили неизвестный вид выдры, жившей 11,4 миллиона лет назад.
Останки удалось обнаружить в глиняном карьере Хаммершмиде на юге Германии — там, где два года назад археологи выудили окаменелость двуногой обезьяны Danuvius guggenmosi.
Новый вид выдры получил имя Vishnuonyx neptuni — Вишну Нептуна. Несколько вымерших представителей рода Vishnuonyx около 14 миллионов лет назад встречались в Азии, а спустя два миллиона лет достигли Восточной Африки. Эти животные имели средний размер и массу от 10 до 15 килограммов. В Европе их окаменелости до сих пор не попадались.
Использовав методы компьютерной томографии, палеонтологи смогли визуализировать строение челюсти животного. Заостренные выступы, режущие лезвия и ограниченные зоны измельчения пищи говорят о преимущественно рыбной диете. Исходя из этого, можно сделать вывод о сходстве V. neptuni с обыкновенной, или речной выдрой (Lutra lutra), широко распространенной по всей планете.
Египетские ученые нашли окаменелость четырехлапого кита
Телеграф рассказывал о находке исследователей из университета Эль-Мансуры. Древнее млекопитающее с четырьмая лапами жило примерно 43 миллиона лет назад. Окаменелость обнаружили в Фаюмской впадине в Западной пустыне Египта.
