Британские ученые опубликовали новое исследование, показав, что горбатые киты для обзаведения потомством могут преодолеть колоссальное расстояние — до 5955 км.
Крупные морские животные проводят лето недалеко от Канады и Аляски. А зимой плывут по направлению к Мексике и Гавайям.
Для исследования ученые использовали более 450 тысяч снимков китов в дикой природе. И отследили маршруты животных. Самцы, которых можно было узнать по характерным отметинам на хвостах, были замечены в двух популярных местах обитания с разницей в 2 месяца.
Горбатые киты выбирают пару не на всю жизнь, а каждый сезон ищут нового партнера. И конкурируют за самок. Иногда вокруг одной самки вьется около семи ухажеров.
Животное получило свое название из-за особенной манеры плавать, выгнув спину. Вес взрослой особи достигает 25-30 тонн, а длина — 17 м. Вес новорожденного детеныша кита составляет 1-2 тонны.
