На северном побережье Африки напротив Гибралтара у побережья Сеуты: небольшого испанского полуэксклава, рыбаки поймали в сети Луну-рыбу массой 2 тонны.
Подняв гиганта на палубу, рыбаки поняли, что имеют дело с редким экземпляром и пригласили ученых. В длину рыба достигла 3,2 метра, в ширину — 2,9 метра.
Луна-рыба не является целенаправленным объектом рыболовного промысла, ее мясо употребляют в пищу только в некоторых регионах Азии, поэтому, если она попадается в сети, ее обычно отпускают обратно в море.
Луна-рыба — самая тяжелая из костных рыб. Она живет в умеренных и теплых водах по всему миру, от Исландии до южных островов Большой Курильской гряды.
Ее сжатое с боков тело напоминает диск; спинной и анальный плавники не имеют колючек; хвостовой плавник утрачен — вместо него развита кожная складка, а сама кожа покрыта мелкими костными бугорками.
Это самая крупная костная рыба из известных науке. Когда детеныши выходят из икринок, их длина не превышает 2,5 мм, а затем начинается резкий рост. Взрослая луна-рыба весит около 1800 кг, то есть в 60 миллионов раз больше, чем вылупившийся малек.
Взяв образцы ДНК Луны-рыбы, команда ученых выпустила ее обратно в море.
