Специалисты из Техасского университета в Остине в США опровергли выдвинутую в 2018 году астронавтами NASA гипотезу о происхождении сигналов, полученных радаром из-под полярной шапки Марса.
Техасцы вынесли вердикт: эти радарные отражения — всего лишь пыльный мираж. Ученые проанализировали радарные отражения по всей поверхности Маркса. Оказалось, что сигналы, отраженные от равнин с вулканическими породами, совпадают с тем, что был получен от «воды» в 2018 году. Это навело ученых на мысль, что источником таинственного сигнала была вулканическая порода подо льдом.
Ведущий автор исследования Сирил Грима настаивает, что для поддержания воды так близко к поверхности нужна как очень соленая среда, так и сильный источник локального тепла, но такого в этом марсианском регионе нет.
«На Земле богатые железом потоки лавы могут оставлять после себя камни, которые аналогичным образом отражают радар. Другие возможности включают залежи полезных ископаемых в высохших руслах рек. В любом случае, выяснение того, что они собой представляют, может ответить на важные вопросы об истории Марса», — говорит Грима.
