В аквариуме в Калифорнийской академии наук в США празднует 90-летие рогозуб. Рыбка поселилась здесь в 1938 году.
Рогозуб относится к вымирающим видам. Это один из шести существующих видов двоякодышащих рыб в мире. Окаменелостей этой группы датируются 380 миллионами лет назад — временем, когда высшие классы позвоночных только начинали развиваться.
В дикой природе его ареал ограничен системой рек Мэри и Бернетт на юго-востоке Квинсленда в Австралии.
Когда рогозуб приехал в Калифорнийскую академию наук, его длина была 1,2 метра. Ученые предполагали, что ему не менее 5 лет. Рыбу назвали Мафусаил — в честь библейского персонажа, который прожил 969 лет.
«Я бы хотел сказать, что это произошло благодаря отличному уходу, но это не так — это генетика», — рассказал Аллан Ян, старший биолог и главный смотритель Мафусаила в аквариуме.
Предыдущий рекорд самой старой рыбы в неволе принадлежал этому же видк. Особь по имени Дедушка жил в аквариуме в Чикаго и умер в возрасте около 85-95 лет.
Мафусаил обладает здоровым аппетитом.
«Он ест все, что я предлагаю, и он ест больше всех. И, хотя он не привередлив, с годами он определился с самыми любимыми блюдами: это креветки и инжир», — рассказал Аллан Ян.
