В Нью-Йорке однополая пара пингвинов высидела яйцо. Что теперь с детенышем?
В США в Нью-Йорке в зоопарке Розамонд Гиффорд однополая пара пингвинов высидела брошенное настоящими родителями яйцо. Более того, они продолжают воспитывать детеныша.
Этот случай называют первым в истории зоопарков.
«Птенец вылупился 1 января! Приемные родители, взрослые самцы пингвинов Гумбольдта Элмер и Лима, по очереди высиживали яйцо и с тех пор прекрасно согревали и кормили малыша», — поделились радостной новостью представители зоопарка.
Отметим, что готовность пары к детям проверили раньше времени: им дали искусственное яйцо и наблюдали за их поведением. Самцы не отходили от него и высиживали его поочередно. А затем Элмер и Лима стали отличными приемными родителями.
«Некоторые пары, получив фиктивное яйцо, будут сидеть на гнезде, но оставляют яйцо в стороне и не высиживают его правильно. Или они будут бороться за то, кто сядет на него. Вот как мы оцениваем, кто будет хорошими приемными родителями — и Элмер и Лима были образцовыми во всех аспектах ухода за яйцами», — сказал директор зоопарка Тед Фокс.
Сегодня в живой природе из-за климатических изменений пингвины Гумбольдта теряют кормовую базу и рискуют исчезнуть как вид. Поэтому в зоопарке всерьез допускают, что практика высиживания птенцов однополыми парами может помочь пингвинам выжить.
