Во всех станциях лондонского метро постоянно звучит фраза «Mind the gap», что можно перевести как «будьте осторожнее при выходе». Но всюду ее произносит робот. И только на одной, на станции Embankment в Северной линии — реальный человеческий голос.
В 70-ых годах прошлого века эти слова записал Освальд Лоуренс. Он скончался на рубеже веков. И никому не было дело до его имени, пока «живую» запись не заменили техногенной.
Тогда в администрацию станции пришла вдова «чтеца», Маргарет МакКолум. И попросила отдать ей кассету, чтобы слушать слова, которые произносит покойный муж, дома.
А дальше оказалось, что более десяти лет женщина каждый день приходила в метро – чтобы спустится на платформу и слушать, как ее муж говорит «Mind the gap». Это был ее единственный способ заполнить пустоту после смерти мужа, которого она очень любила.
Сотрудники транспортного отдела Лондона отдали женщине дубль записи. Но восстановили на станции старую запись, решив, что у прогулок пожилой дамы нельзя отнимать их прежний смысл.
Более того, решили не менять запись даже после смерти Маргарет (она жива). Просто оставить ее навсегда, как память о любви, которая не заканчивается со старостью и смертью.
