Ученые из американского Национального музея естественной истории секвенировали первый черновой вариант генома Phalangium opilio — обыкновенного сенокосца.
Зачем такие странные манипуляции с насекомым? Задача эксперимента — поиск гена, отвечающего за формирование конечностей.
Почему жертвой исследований стал сенокосец? Длина его ног составляет 38-54 мм при длине тела всего 6-9 мм. Это ему в русском языке прозвище «косиножка».
Сенокосец — паукообразное животное, а не паук. В английском языке его называют daddy longlegs — «длинноногий папочка».
Но вернемся к секвенированию генома. Оно позволило выделить три гена, отвечающих за развитие ног у сенокосцев. Активация двух из них начиналась еще на эмбриональной стадии развития, рассказывает Национальная География.
Используя метод РНК-интерференции, биологи заблокировали этот процесс у нескольких зародышей. В результате после появления на свет шесть из восьми ног у косиножек были короткими и быстро трансформировались в педипальпы.
В следующем эксперименте ученые «отключили» третий ген. Это привело к появлению на свет паукообразных с короткими ногами, которые при этом были лишены суставов, позволяющих конечностям обхватывать объекты.
Исследователи намерены найти больше генов, связанных с длиной ног необычных животных.
